The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has said in 2024, it recorded the highest volume of refunds and compensations in its history.
According to the NCAA's spokesperson, Michael Achimugu, an enforcement action he initiated in December 2024 against five airlines, including Air Peace, was the first time in the authority's history that airlines were sanctioned for consumer protection infractions.
He also stated that the NCAA commenced the process of sanctioning Kenya Airways, adding that heavier penalties are being discussed against Royal Air Maroc.
"Beyond consumer protection, the NCAA also suspended Dana Air for poor financial health. Max Air recently had to suspend its operations. What do you think led to that? Two other operators also had their licenses revoked by the Authority a few weeks ago," said.
Achimugu brought this to light in response to an X user who expressed dissatisfaction with the NCAA's handling of flight disruptions by airlines.
He added, "What we will not do is fail to educate passengers about the facts. Not every flight disruption is the fault of the airlines. Is this true? Yes, it is. If so, why should we be afraid to educate?
"I announced to all airlines when I came on board that no one should offer me a free ticket, rebate ticket, or upgrade. This is common knowledge."
He also revealed that the NCAA's duties are not only to passengers but to the airlines as well, adding that his job, specifically, is to protect passengers, airlines, and other stakeholders.
"If educating passengers is deemed to be PR... But when I go hard on the airlines, I don't see you making these comments," he concluded.
