The planned strike action by the labour unions at the Nigerian Meteorological Agency has been suspended.

This was disclosed on their official X, formerly Twitter account on Sunday.

The aviation unions, including the National Union of Air Transport Employee Association of Nigeria, the Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals, and the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations and Technical and Recreational Employees, have instructed Nigeria Meteorology Agency staff announced their intentions to engage on strike action on Monday, May 20, 2024.

The planned strike stems from management’s failure to address 45 months of minimum wage arrears and consequential adjustments for staff members.

In response to this, NiMet’s Director of Human Resources, Nasiru Sani, said, “The issue of the unpaid 42-month consequential salary adjustment by the Federal Government predates the present NiMet management.

He further added, “However, as a responsible management that cares about the welfare of its staff, we are engaging with the unions and we regularly update them of our various engagements with government agencies to help pay off the arrears.”

With effect to NiMet’s meeting with the unions, the agency said, “Labour Unions in the Nigerian Meteorological Agency have suspended the planned strike action scheduled to begin on Monday, 20th May 2024.

“This followed an agreement reached today, Sunday, 19th May, 2024, during a special session convened by the House Committee on Aviation and Technology,” the agency said.
