Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi and Nottingham Forest defender Ola Aina have assured Nigerians of World Cup qualification despite the Super Eagles' disappointing draw against Zimbabwe.
The duo featured prominently as the Super Eagles were held to a 1-1 draw at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, casting doubts on the team's chances of securing a World Cup ticket.
Victor Osimhen opened the scoring in the 74th minute, but Tawanda Chirewa equalized for Zimbabwe in the 91st minute, snatching a vital point for the visitors.
The result leaves Nigeria in fourth place with seven points, six points behind group leaders Bafana Bafana of South Africa, who defeated Benin 2-0 in Abidjan.
After the game, Iwobi took to social media to encourage fans following the disappointing result.
“We’ll make [the] World Cup in the mighty name of Jesus,” the 28-year-old posted on his Snapchat story.
Shortly after, Aina shared a similar sentiment, sharing his optimism on social media.
The Nottingham Forest defender wrote, “We will make this WC chill.”
The Super Eagles will return to action in the World Cup qualifiers in September.
