Former Arsenal and Manchester City forward Emmanuel Adebayor has become the latest African legend to aim a dig at former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher for denigrating the African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Carragher, in a recent program on Sky Sports, suggested that the AFCON lacked the prestige of the European Championship and the FIFA World Cup while analyzing Mohamed Salah's Ballon d'Or chances in what has been an explosive season for the Egyptian.
In response to the former Liverpool defender, Adebayor stated that he faced several top-class defenders in the Premier League, and Carragher wasn't one of them.
The former Togolese captain added that the comment wasn't only disrespectful to the competition but also to African people.
“These comments are a total disrespect not only to AFCON but also to all Africans,” Adebayor told African Soccer.
“It’s always the same when AFCON comes around—clubs hesitate to release players, and critics try to downplay its importance.
“I played against world-class defenders in the Premier League; Carragher is not one of them.”
