Turkish journalist reveals why Galatasaray signed Morata despite having Osimhen

Turkish Super Lig giants Galatasaray have bolstered their attack with the addition of Spanish captain Alvaro Morata.

Morata joined Galatasaray from AC Milan on a six-month loan spell for the remainder of the 2024/25 campaign.

While his qualities are in no doubt, the signing of the former Real Madrid and Chelsea striker has raised eyebrows considering the fact that Victor Osimhen is still at the club.

Osimhen has been in great goal-scoring form since joining Galatasaray on a season-long loan from Napoli in early September.

The 26-year-old has now registered 17 goals and five assists in 21 appearances across all competitions.

The Super Eagles striker is now averaging a goal or assist every 71 minutes.

According to Turkish journalist Bülent Timurlenk, as reported by Peşindeyiz Galatasaray, Galatasaray opted to sign Morata as a backup option to Victor Osimhen, who has been prone to injuries in recent times.

Osimhen has become the mainstay in the Galatasaray attack following Mauro Icardi's injury, which has ruled him out for the rest of the season.

“The Galatasaray coaching staff, already concerned about the AZ Alkmaar match where Osimhen was suspended, recognized the risk. If the Nigerian were to suffer even a minor injury, it could significantly derail their championship ambitions.

“Do we even need to discuss Morata’s illustrious career? If the Spanish national team’s starting striker agrees to join you during the mid-season transfer window, you’ve struck gold.”

“Morata will undoubtedly serve as a vital link between midfield and attack, acting both as a playmaker and a finisher behind Osimhen. His tactical intelligence, coupled with the technical discipline of Spanish football, makes him an asset. If not for a managerial change at AC Milan, he wouldn’t have considered leaving.”
