Former Italian footballer and manager Paolo Di Canio has slammed Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini for substituting Ademola Lookman in their crucial Serie A clash against Napoli last weekend.
Atalanta suffered a 3-2 defeat at home to Napoli despite beating Antonio Conte's side 3-0 in the reverse fixture back in November.
Mateo Retegui gave the home side the lead in the 16th minute before Mateo Politano equalized for the Partenopei 11 minutes later.
Former Manchester United star Scott McTominay gave Napoli the lead five minutes before the break, but Ademola Lookman leveled the score 10 minutes after the restart.
Romelu Lukaku scored the winner with 12 minutes left to play, after Gasperini had substituted his two goal scorers, Lookman and Retegui.
Sharing his thoughts on the game, Di Canio criticized Gasperini's decision to withdraw Lookman and Retegui, as he believes the two substitutions reduced his team's chances of scoring in the final moments of the game.
"I agree that the changes in attack were wrong. Between Retegui and Lookman, one of the two should have stayed on the pitch. Removing both of them reduced the chances of finding the goal in the final moments," he remarked.
