The race to become the next African Footballer of the Year is steadily gathering momentum in the football circles.
Fans have witnessed outstanding performances from some of the finest talents from the African continent, including record-breaking achievements.
Among the standout African stars this season are Nigeria's Ademola Lookman and Victor Boniface, Guinea's Serhou Guirassy, and Morocco's Brahim Diaz.
Victor Osimhen, the current reigning African Footballer of the Year following his exceptional campaign with Napoli in the 2022/2023 season, is quite certain he will not defend his crown this year.
The 25-year-old, however, has thrown his weight behind his Super Eagles teammate Ademola Lookman to dethrone him.
Speaking in an interview with the Counter Attack podcast, the former Lille striker believes the Atalanta forward deserves all the accolades he is receiving.
"I'm really happy to see Ademola in this position because I know some of his personal stories, and from a football perspective, he deserves all the good things coming his way. He's a great guy," Osimhen shared.
"He's passionate, and he works diligently. I'm truly happy for him, and without a doubt, he’s going to win the African Player of the Year—100 percent. I've already told him he's bringing it home, and he deserves it for everything he's done for us. It's a win for Nigeria because he’s represented us so well. He’s carried the team, and this is his moment. I pray to God he wins it."
Lookman had a brilliant campaign with Atalanta last season, registering 17 goals and 10 assists for the club.
The 26-year-old guided La Dea to clinch the Europa League after netting a historic hat-trick against Bayer Leverkusen in the final.
Lookman's exceptional performance did not go unnoticed, as he has been shortlisted in the 30-man candidate list for the prestigious Ballon d'Or award.
