The team went ahead to qualify Nigeria to its first-ever World Cup finals in the United States two months later.
The debutants were one of the surprise packages at the tournament after topping their group which included Argentina, Bulgaria, and Greece.
Nigeria defeated Bulgaria 3–0, lost to Argentina 1–2, and reached the second round after a 2–0 victory over Greece.
Nigeria played Italy in the round of 16 and took the lead courtesy of a goal from Emmanuel Amunike in the 25th minutes.
