Veteran sports journalist Charles Ojugbana has disclosed that some Super Eagles players brought their girlfriends to the team hotel in Uyo ahead of the FIFA World Cup qualifier against South Africa.
Ojugbana who is a former board member of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) made the disclosure while sharing his expert opinion on the issues surrounding Finidi Goerge's resignation and Victor Osimhen social media outburst at the erstwhile Super Eagles coach.
Speaking in an exclusive interview on Arise TV morning show, Ojugbana revealed that such a conduct from the players made them lose focus ahead of the game.
"I read somewhere from one of Nigeria's best sports reporters that among one of the things alleged to have happened in Uyo was that certain players came to camp with their girlfriends", he told Arise TV interview panel.
"Now, don't get me wrong, footballers are human beings even at the World Cup level players are allowed to associate with their girlfriends and their wives, but it has to be organized.
"The players are in camp A in this hotel, the wives and the girlfriends are in camp B in the other side of town and whenever the coach so desires, he creates a platform for interaction among spouses but a player coming to Uyo dragging his girlfriend around means he has lost focus even before the game starts," he concluded.
The Super Eagles of Nigeria were held to 1-1 draw against Bafana Bafana at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo before losing 2-1 to Gernot Rohrs Benin Republic side.
These events culminated in the resignation of Finidi George after just two matches in charge. The former Enyimba coach was reportedly displeased with the NFF's decision to hire a foreign technical adviser for the team.
