Hilda Baci: What Guinness World Record says about financial compensation to record holders

Hilda Baci, a Nigeria chef left tongues wagging when she ended her marathon cooking at 100 hours, setting a new Guinness World Record for ‘longest cooking time’ by an individual.

Hilda who turn on her gas on Thursday, May 11 surpassed the record held by Indian chef Lata Tandon for the longest cooking duration.

The 27-year-old had initially set a 96-hour target for herself.

President Muhammadu Buhari, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwoolu, and Senate president hopeful, Godswill Akpabio are among some of the dignitaries who threw their weights behind her in her quest.

Celebrities, clerics and other well-meaning Nigerians also came out both on social media and right at the venue to cheer on the celebrity chef to victory.

The Guinness World Records management will review the chef’s unprecedented feat before her name is officially inducted into the famous book that comprises a host of Nigerians with achievements in other categories.

While the conversation has continued on various platforms, social media users have begun asking what she stands to gain for this new feat.

According to the website, Guinness world record holders don't get paid anything as prize money upon creating or breaking a record.

The Guinness' official website says; “As the world's unrivaled authority on record-breaking achievement, our role is to celebrate the world’s best, to inspire ordinary people and to entertain and inform.”

“For these reasons, we do not pay record-breakers for their achievements or for carrying out a record title attempt. We are also unable to cover any expenses, offer sponsorship or provide equipment for anyone attempting a record.”

The website also stated that they are unable to make contributions to individuals, charities or businesses. This is to maintain their unbiased stance as the world's global record-breaking authority and to ensure that they are truly inclusive of all applicants.
