Why Amokachi rejected Super Eagles assistant coaching role

Former Super Eagles international Daniel Amokachi has reportedly turned down his appointment as assistant coach to Finidi George.

Amokachi, who earned 44 caps for the Super Eagles and scored 14 goals, was named as part of the four backroom staff to assist the former Enyimba coach during his official unveiling by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

According to a report by ScoreNigeria, the 51-year-old rejected the NFF offer due to unsatisfactory monetary rewards and because his involvement would be at the discretion of Finidi George, as revealed by former Nigerian goalkeeper Emmanuel Babayaro.

"Amokachi was appointed Super Eagles assistant coach under these conditions – No salary and his appearance in any Super Eagles engagement is on a needs basis and subject to the head coach’s discretion. How demeaning can these conditions be? Amokachi said yes to the appointment as the Super Eagles assistant coach but an emphatic no to the demeaning conditions attached to it, and yes, the conditions were only just communicated recently," Babayaro said as revealed by ScoreNigeria.

This means the former Everton forward will not be in the dugout to offer his expertise when Nigeria tackles South Africa at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo in a crucial World Cup qualifier later today (Friday, June 7).

The match will kick off at 8:00 pm local time.
