Nigerian international Victor Boniface has shed light on his relationship with Spanish manager Xabi Alonso.
Boniface was in action for Leverkusen when they defeated VfL Wolfsburg in the German Bundesliga last weekend.
The Super Eagles striker came off the bench in the 68th minute to score a late winner in the 94th minute, securing a crucial win for Xabi Alonso’s side.
Sharing his experience of playing under the former Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder, Boniface described Alonso as a great manager who demands his players to give more.
“With the coach, he was a top footballer in his playing days, and everybody knows how good he was. He tries to motivate us as a coach, and even when we are playing well, he demands more from me, especially. He tells me, ‘Boni, you have the body, the technique, and the size, I want you to give me more,’” Boniface told Sporty TV.
The former Royal Union SG forward also disclosed that Alonso advises him to learn from former Chelsea and Ivorian striker Didier Drogba.
“He tells me to watch Drogba. To be honest, in the last game, which we won 4-3, before I came on, he told me to be strong, to be in the box, to play like Drogba. He’s always behind us and we want to give 100% because we trust him,” Boniface added.
Boniface has continued from where he left off last season, scoring three goals and providing one assist for the Bundesliga title holders this season.
