Torres had a really tough time at Stamford Bridge. Try as he might, he just couldn’t recapture the prolific form he had demonstrated at Liverpool and Atletico Madrid.
Given that Chelsea had shelled out a colossal £50 million fee to bring the Spaniard to the club, the pressure on his shoulders was overwhelming, and it looked like it was really getting to him.
But to the surprise of everybody, on April 24, 2012, Torres managed to give Chelsea fans a remarkable moment worthy of at least a full page in their club’s history books.
Torres iconic moment was coming on as a substitute for Didier Drogba on April 24, 2012, to score a last-minute goal against Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final, which gave Chelsea a 2–2 draw, and also eliminated Barcelona from the tournament, as Chelsea won 3–2 on aggregate.
In his first full season at Chelsea, Torres won the FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League. The following season, he scored in the final of the 2012–13 UEFA Europa League, helping Chelsea win the competition for the first time.
