Former Liverpool and England striker, Peter Crouch, has debunked a viral statement he allegedly made about Ademola Lookman’s choice of nationality.

Lookman was the star of the show at the Aviva Arena in Dublin as he scored a hat-trick against Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen, ending their 51-game unbeaten streak and lifting the Europa League for Gian Piero-Gasperini’s Atalanta.

After the game, the Nigerian was praised for his performance on the big stage by many and is a leading contender for the CAF Player of the Year award.

Former Liverpool striker, Crouch, also praised the former Leicester City winger, commending his hard work and dedication to the team.

“This is why you play football. Lookman, who’s been a footballing nomad, has finally found a home and scored a hat-trick in a European Cup final. It’s an amazing story, and those fans will never forget the name Ademola Lookman,” Crouch told TNT Sport.

Several media outlets also reported that Crouch mentioned Lookman could have played for the Three Lions of England if he’d been patient. Lookman was born in England, although his parents are from Nigeria. He represented England at youth level, before opting to play for the Super Eagles in 2022.

Crouch, on his X account, debunked the widespread statement, claiming he made no such claims.

“This is mad I didn’t say this Why would I I said he’s been around various clubs worked hard and now he’s performing for Atalanta Didn’t mention Nigeria once,” the former England striker said.

Lookman will be leading the line for the Super Eagles of Nigeria in their upcoming World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic.
