The real reason Ahmed Musa earned nickname 'The Governor'

He may not get the recognition he deserves among some of the greatest players to have graced Nigerian football, but Ahmed Musa has certainly made a mark on both the local and international football stage.

With 110 appearances for Nigeria, Ahmed Musa is certainly up there among the most capped Super Eagles players, alongside other greats like Vincent Enyeama and Joseph Yobo.

The former Leicester City striker has netted 18 goals in his over a century of appearances for the three-time African champions.

Despite holding an enviable record as the most capped player for Nigeria, Musa is not fondly remembered by the Super Eagles faithful for this remarkable feat.

However, he is remembered for his heroics at the pinnacle of world football, the FIFA World Cup, where he holds an incredible record as Nigeria's top scorer at the Mundial with four goals.

This feat earned him the nickname "The Governor," as disclosed by the Super Eagles' official handle on X (formerly Twitter).

Musa scored a brace in the Super Eagles' 3-2 defeat to Argentina at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

He replicated the same feat four years later, scoring another brace against Iceland in the group stage of the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

The former Al Nassr forward is ranked third on the list of African top scorers at the FIFA World Cup, only behind Ghana's Asamoah Gyan with six goals and Cameroon legend Roger Milla with five goals.

Currently with Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) side Kano Pillars, there have been calls for Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle to invite Musa for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe, as some fans believe he still has some magic under his belt.
