Ahead of the crucial 2026 World Cup qualifiers against South Africa, Super Eagles defender Chidozie Awaziem has been spotted learning the new national anthem.

In a video that has surfaced on social media, the Hajduk Split center back was seen learning how to sing the new anthem on his phone as the players walked through the hallway of the hotel where they are lodging in Uyo.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on his one-year last week announced a change of the country's national anthem, a move which sparked controversy on social media.

The new anthem, "Nigeria We Hail Thee," replaced the beloved "Arise O Compatriots" that Nigerians have sung with pride since 1978.

The move has been met with criticism for being a misplaced priority amidst the country's pressing issues.

The Super Eagles will take on Bafana Bafana in a crucial World Cup qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo. The match will kick off at 8:00 pm local time.
