Bayer Leverkusen star Tella eyes Super Eagles return

Nathan Tella Nathan Tella

Nigerian international Nathan Tella has expressed his desire to return to the Super Eagles team.

The English-born Nigerian committed his international career to Nigeria in 2023, making his debut against Rwanda.

However, the Leverkusen star has not featured for the three-time African champions since due to a lack of playing minutes at his club.

Despite expressing his desire to return to the Super Eagles, the 25-year-old admits that he needs more game time with the Bundesliga title holders to earn a possible call-up.

“Of course, it’s an honour to represent your country, but I have to play here more to get the recognition to play with the country. I think it’s all about baby steps, keep getting better, keep improving, and if I continue to do the right things, I hope Nigeria will call me back,” he told Omasports TV.

“I can’t go just because of who I am; I have to earn the opportunity to play for Nigeria. If I’m not playing well for my club, I have to work hard to get back into the team here, then the national team follows.”

Tella has seen just 483 game minutes in 15 appearances for Xabi Alonso's side this season.
