The Super Eagles may yet be getting a new manager despite the recent appointment of Finidi George by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on April 29.

The 53-year-old, whose appointment by the football federation was met with a flurry of divisive opinions, did little to justify the faith placed in him, with a string of lacklustre results in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification clash against South Africa and the Republic of Benin.

However, in the aftermath of the crucial qualification fixtures, which left many in the NFF hierarchy dissatisfied, a report has surfaced indicating that the federation has begun steps that could lead to Finidi’s dismissal as coach.

NFF commences steps to sack Finidi

According to a report by OwnGoalNigeria, the football federation are considering the possibility of firing the former Enyimba manager.

The report suggests that the decision to let go of the former Real Betis forward is influenced by the fact that the World Cup qualifiers are on hold until March 2025, which would allow whoever is appointed coach of the team ample time to prepare before the run of crunch fixtures.

The report concludes by emphasising that, despite the trust placed in Finidi and the extensive support provided to him, he seems far from the ideal candidate to achieve the desired results with the Super Eagles.

The NFF hierarchy are scheduled to hold a meeting with Finidi in the coming weeks, which is expected to significantly impact his future.

According to FotMob data, the Super Eagles currently sit fifth in their World Cup qualification standings, following three draws and a defeat in their opening four fixtures.
