The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president, Ibrahim Gusau, remains confident that the Super Eagles will secure a Group C ticket in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers despite their poor start to the campaign.
The three-time African champions currently occupy fifth position in the group, trailing the joint leaders Benin Republic and South Africa by four points.
To stand a chance of qualifying for the global soccer fiesta, the Super Eagles will need to win all their remaining six matches.
Gusau has assured fans that, despite the team's precarious position, they will still go on to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
"This is a very sad moment for Nigerian football, and we cannot run away from that. What I can assure you is that we’re working tirelessly with the Sports
Minister to take some holistic measures that will change the entire system," Gusau told reporters.
"It’s still possible (to qualify for the World Cup), and we’re going to make it," he added.
The NFF has also decided to appoint a new technical adviser to support head coach Finidi George, following disappointing results in the June World Cup qualifiers, where the Super Eagles managed a 1-1 draw against South Africa at home and suffered a 2-1 defeat to Benin Republic.
The Super Eagles' next World Cup qualifying match is scheduled against Rwanda in March next year.
