'I'm just waiting patiently' — Maduka Okoye gives honest opinion on Super Eagles number one goalkeeping spot

Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has expressed his readiness to reclaim the Super Eagles' number one goalkeeping spot.

Okoye, who was Nigeria's number one shot-stopper during the 2021 African Cup of Nations in Cameroon, lost the position after committing a blunder in the round of 16 game against Tunisia.

Despite recording a perfect record in the group stage, the three-time African champions crashed out after losing 1-0 to the North Africans.

Okoye's mistake proved costly as he came under severe backlash from Nigerians, leading to his exclusion from the team for two years.

However, following his impressive performance with Udinese in Serie A, the former Watford man has been handed a call-up for the ongoing AFCON qualifiers.

Speaking ahead of the game against Libya, Okoye expressed confidence in his ability to return between the sticks for the Super Eagles.

“Yeah, of course, this is what I want, but Stanley (Nwabali) set a high point with a great AFCON.

"I'm just patiently waiting, and trying to do my best in training and impress the staff as much as possible.”
