Fulham defender Calvin Bassey has shared insights on why African players demand high wages in their contracts.

In a recent interaction, the 25-year-old disclosed that half of his salary is channeled towards taking care of his family, including his mom and brothers.

The former Ajax defender added that two to three thousand pounds of his weekly wages are given back to his family and society back home, justifying why footballers always want more money and not necessarily to live lavish lifestyles.

“When I look at my wage, half isn’t mine. Half is for my mum and brothers, who I’ve got to look after. I can’t speak for every other culture, but you know with African culture, we’re all about taking care of our families, and I have to do the same.

“I have to think of my family back home and what I can do to help them out. As mad as it sounds, two to three thousand pounds a week can make a difference in looking after more people. That’s why I feel like as players, we always want more. Not necessarily for ourselves or to live a flashy life but because we have people we look out for, and that is a very important factor,” the former Rangers defender added.

Bassey has been in fine form for Fulham this season, helping Marco Silva's side pick up some crucial points in the Premier League.

The Cottagers currently sit 10th in the Premier League after 22 matches.
