The Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation, Austin Eguavoen has set the record straight on recent reports that he called for a quick decision on the engagement of a foreign coach for the Super Eagles.
Speaking from Belgium in an interview with Mitchel Obi on Kennis FM, Eguavoen who successfully prosecuted the 2025 AFCON Qualifying campaign with the team as interim coach insisted, “I love my country, and can’t easily forget those memorable moments in 1994 when we lifted the AFCON trophy in Tunisia.”
Speaking further, the coach said he called for a quick resolution of the Super Eagles coaching job.
He emphasized, “Whoever they want to engage we have to do that real quick and all hands must be on deck because we all have to work to ensure the Super Eagles qualified for the 2026 World Cup. March is just around the corner.”
Asked whether he would advise the NFF to go abroad or stay at home in their search for a new head coach for the Super Eagles.
“I will advise we stay at home,” he said firmly.
“I prefer we look inwards, although the crew can be enlarged to include a foreign coach with a Nigerian as the head.”
Although he said, repeatedly, that he was not desperate for the job, he was asked if he would be shocked by another request from the NFF that he continued with the team for the World Cup Qualifying campaign.
Eguavoensaid, “As a Nigerian, nothing is impossible. Nothing surprises anyone anymore. But the quicker the better.”
