The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar III, has said that social media is a terrorist organisation that must be dealt with by security agencies.
According to the sultan, this is so because it enables people to pass off fake stories as real, thereby deceiving people.
The monarch said this at the 7th Executive Committee Meeting of the Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council held behind closed doors in Maiduguri, Borno State, where he addressed the renewed killings in Plateau and other states.
He said, "What happened has happened and it's terrible. Social media is one terrorist organisation. Somebody can sit in the comfort of their home and formulate stories, and you will consider that it is true.
"Social media is a terrorist organisation that we must deal with. Security agencies must deal with this terrorist organisation called social media.
"So we are not happy with what has been happening, whether in Plateau or in some other places."
On the attacks in Plateau, he said, “We’ve condemned these killings multiple times, yet the violence persists,” the Sultan said.
“It’s time our political leaders and security agencies act decisively to curb this madness.”
