The legendary Jay-Jay Okocha has weighed in on the conversation surrounding the Super Eagles’ FIFA World Cup qualification campaign.
The three-time African champions are at risk of missing out on the next edition of the Mundial after managing just seven points from six games in the qualifiers.
Nigeria are currently six points behind Group C leaders South Africa, who sit at the top with 13 points.
Eric Chelle's side cannot afford to drop any more points if they want to avoid the ugly scenario of missing out on two consecutive World Cup tournaments.
Sharing his personal experience, Okocha noted that missing out on the 2006 World Cup in Germany still hurts.
“It is a dream for every player to play in the World Cup,” he told Soccernet.
“Personally, not qualifying for the 2006 World Cup still haunts me. I still feel bad whenever I remember it because it could have been my fourth.”
The former Bolton Wanderers captain added that the disappointment of not qualifying for the World Cup will linger in the players' thoughts.
“They will be very disappointed if they don’t make it,” he added.
“People don’t realize sometimes that players are the ones that feel it the most—because it is their job, their dream.”
The Super Eagles will return to action in the World Cup qualifiers in September when they take on Rwanda and South Africa.
