Rivers United Football Club have said they are deeply saddened by the passing of two Nigerian football icons, Christian Chukwu, also known as "Chairman," and Charles Bassey.
Both were key members of Nigeria's historic 1980 Africa Cup of Nations-winning team.

The management, technical crew, players, and staff of Rivers United FC extend their deepest condolences to the families, friends, and the Nigerian football fraternity. General Manager, Chief Dr. Okey Kpalukwu, paid tribute to the deceased, stating:
"Nigeria has lost two of its legends. Both legends were models to emulate, disciplined leaders on and off the field, embodying strength, vision, and consistency."
Rivers United FC prays for the eternal rest of the souls of Christian Chukwu and Charles Bassey and for the fortitude of their loved ones and the Nigerian football community to bear this immense loss.
