Social commentator Isaac Fayose has criticized Nigeria’s electricity tariffs, describing the exclusive Band A system as fraudulent.

In a post on X, the influencer alleged that Band A, which is supposed to provide users with a minimum of 20 hours of electricity daily, is a "fraud."

His remarks follow protests from Nigerians who have expressed frustration over inconsistencies in the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission’s policies.

Protesters carried placards and banners with messages such as "Your Band A is killing the economy every day," "Save us from the fraudulent act of EKEDC," and "Your Band A cost is unbearable."

In February, the federal government announced plans to regularize electricity tariffs for customers in Bands A, B, and C to enhance efficiency and reliability in the power sector.

This announcement was made by the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, during the public presentation of the National Integrated Electricity Policy (NIEP) and the Nigeria Integrated Resource Plan in Abuja.

Under the current tariff structure, Band B customers receive between 17 to 18 hours of electricity supply and pay N63 per kWh, while Band A customers, who receive only 2 to 6 extra hours, pay N209 per kWh, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.

Adelabu explained that in 2024, the power sector implemented cost-reflective tariffs for approximately 15% of electricity consumers. While this percentage may seem small, he emphasized that it represents a significant step in sector reforms.

The minister also highlighted ongoing efforts to enhance Nigeria’s electricity distribution and transmission infrastructure, which would allow more consumers to transition to Band A.

“As we continue to improve our distribution and transmission infrastructure, more consumers will be upgraded to Band A,” Adelabu stated.
