Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali took to social media to congratulate Kelechi Iheanacho after scoring for Middlesbrough in their 2-1 win over Oxford United on Saturday, Soccernet.ng reports.
Iheanacho has been through a rough patch in the past two years, as he struggled at Leicester City before moving Sevilla last summer. But after failing to impress, he had to move to Middlesbrough.
Iheanacho has enjoyed a lot of game time since joining Boro, but he failed to score in his first seven games. This even cost him his place in the Super Eagles squad as he was ommitted from the squad that took on Zimbabwe and Rwanda last week. The 28-year-old striker has also gotten a lot of flacks for his poor numbers.
However, the Super Eagles star finally got the monkeys off his back, as he scored the opening goal for Boro in their 2-1 win over Oxford United. Iheanacho got on the end of a low cross from Samuel Iling Junior and just guided the ball into the net with close range.
After the game, Nwabali took to Instagram to congratulate Nwabali. The Chippa United star wrote, “I’m happier than you brother.”
Kelechi Iheanacho has to continue like this to help Middlesbrough gain promotion
During the international break, Kelechi Iheanacho shared videos of himself online doing some personal training. And the goal was just proof of his effort.
Although the goal was not exactly borne out of pure brilliance, it gives Iheanacho a confidence boost heading into the next set of games.
Middlesbrough currently sit seventh in the English Championship, separated from the last playoff spot by goal difference.
Iheanacho will look to have a good end to the season and help Boro seal a playoff spot and promotion to the Premier League.
