The Olukosi of Ilukosi-Ijesa, Oba Omotooyosi Adebayo Akinleye, has told Yoruba people not to make themselves slaves of the Sultan of Sokoto, Pope or a pastor.
According to him, Yoruba people who are Muslims and Christians should consider themselves children of kings and the Most High.
Oba Akinyele said this amid reports that some Yoruba Muslims are subjecting themselves to the authority of the Sultan of Sokoto, Abubakar Sa'ad Muhammad III.
He wrote on X, "Oh, you sons and daughters of Oduduwa, oh, you Yoruba of the world, being a Muslim does not turn you into a slave of the Sultan. Being a Catholic does not turn you into a slave of the Pope. Being a Christian does not turn you into a pastor's slave. You are children of kings, and the Most High King (Eledumare) is your God."
Oba Akinyele said this weeks after he told the Sultan that the implementation of Sharia in the Southwest could undermine the secularity of the region.
This was after the Sultan-led National Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) lamented the resistance from Southwest leaders to the establishment of Sharia panels.
In an open letter to the Sultan, the monarch shared an insights on the judicial evolution in Yorubaland, particularly regarding the transition from the traditional Osugbo/Ogboni judicial system to the adoption of a more universal law of freedom.
