The recent meeting between former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Atiku Abubakar, and other stalwarts of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), including former Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, and former Governor of Cross River State, Senator Liyel Imoke, has sparked speculation about their plans ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The delegation, which arrived at Obasanjo’s Abeokuta residence within the precincts of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library at exactly 12:37 p.m., was received by elder statesman Otunba Oyewole Fasawe.
While the exact reason for the visit remains unknown, there are indications that it may be linked to Atiku’s 2027 presidential ambition.
When asked whether the meeting was related to his political plans, Atiku responded, “I am here on a courtesy call. I am not here to talk politics.”
However, speculation was further fueled by a source privy to the discussions, who told The Punch, “Yes, we are trying to see how we can collectively work together to salvage this country ahead of 2027.”
Meanwhile, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed the meeting as a gathering of “indolent and lazy” politicians.
According to the National Secretary of the APC, Senator Ajibola Basiru, the party is currently focused on strategizing for the November 8 governorship election in Anambra State.
He said, “We don’t react to other people’s activities as a political party. We focus on our own plans. Right now, our plate is full. Our priority is winning and bringing Anambra on board for the APC. So, we don’t have time for talks about political meetings. We also have the responsibility of running the government.
“They (Atiku and Obasanjo) are idle; they don’t have anything meaningful to do. So, they can meet any day, anytime. Our government is focused on delivering President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. We have no issue with some idle individuals meeting whomever they wish to meet.”
When asked whether the APC considers the gathering of political heavyweights a threat, Basiru dismissed it as a non-issue.
“How can people who are in disarray be a threat to a solid political party like the APC? We are talking about a party that is not in crisis and has high-caliber individuals capable of winning elections.”
