Tinubu, Obi and other popular Nigerians who have congratulated Tems on her Grammy win

Nigerian singer, Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems added the prestigious Grammy Award to her tall list of accolades after her first at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 2.

She blew off stiff competition from industry colleagues Yemi Alade, Asake & Wizkid, Davido & Lojay, and Burna Boy who were nominated for the same category.

Her song ‘Love Me Jeje’ which was released early last year scooped the award for the Best African Music Performance award.

In her acceptance speech, she dedicated the award to her mom who celebrates her birthday on Monday, February 3, 2025.

“Wow, dear God. Thank you so much for putting me on this stage and bringing me to this team.

“Tomorrow is my mum’s birthday and this is her first Grammys. I just want to thank you ma because she has really done a lot for me and my brother.

“Happy birthday mum. And I want to thank my team. Muyiwa, Wale, my beautiful stylist, and lovely girls… I love you guys.

“Thank you so much. To God be the glory. Honestly, He has changed my life so much,” she said.

Her victory has generated several reactions as congratulations continue to pour in from individual and political stalwarts both on social and traditional media.

Bola Ahmed Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated singer Tems in a post on X.

Tinubu in his message said he was proud of the 29-year-old Tems and other Nigerians nominated for the awards.

“Congratulations to @temsbaby on winning the Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance, ‘Love me jeje,’” the president wrote.

“I am proud of her accomplishments and those of Nigerian origin who were nominated for the Grammy awards. Their achievements continue to inspire all Nigerians. Congratulations!”

The Best African Music Performance category, introduced only last year, was previously won by South African star Tyla for her hit single ‘Water.’

Peter Obi

The former presidential candidate of the Labour Party expressed his excitement at the huge strides Nigeria's youth are making on the global stage, especially in the entertainment sector.

Peter Obi, in a statement on his X handle on Monday, February 2 said Nigeria remained a home to the endless flow of talents who through their creative arts, continue to put the nation on the global map.

The statement by Peter Obi partly reads: “I like therefore to extend my hearty congratulations to our Nigerian Afrobeats star, Tems @temsbaby , who just secured her second Grammy Award with her win in the Best African Music Performance category.

“I also rejoice with Nigeria’s entertainment industry and other Nigerian artists who were nominated for different awards in their respective categories.

“Undoubtedly, Nigeria remains home to the endless flow of talents who through their creative arts, continue to put the nation on the global map.

“I firmly remain committed to building a nation that fosters growth among the youths and helps them discover and harness their individual talents for national productivity.”

Davido

Davido who was equally nominated for the same category congratulated Chris Brown and Tems on their victory.

He wrote in the post: “Congratulations to my one and only! @chrisbrown! And to the Queen @temsbaby we are proud of you.”

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu

The Lagos State Governor in his congratulatory message said the recognition highlights Tems’ exceptional talent and contribution to the music industry not only in Nigeria and the African continent but also on the global stage.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, in a statement issued on Monday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, said the 29-year-old Tems has achieved a milestone with the international recognition at the 67th Grammy Award.

Governor Sanwo-Olu said the award received by Tems is an affirmation of Lagos as truly the home of entertainment, creativity, tourism, culture and arts.

He said: “Temilade Openiyi once again has proved to the world that she is a creative of an uncommon talent. We thank her for bringing the Best African Music Performance Grammy back to Nigeria. As a Lagosian, we are excited with her success.

Tems winning the 67th Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance is a confirmation that our dear Lagos State remains the hub of entertainment, creativity and tourism in the West African sub-region.

“On behalf of my family, the government, and the people of Lagos State, I congratulate Tems for achieving this great feat, and I urge her not to rest on her oars as the future remains a lot brighter than it is today.”

Yemi Alade

The nominee in a post on her social media appreciated members while of her record label who had invested significantly in her career growth.

She also wrote: "Congratulations to the winner @temsbaby"
