Come home to do what? - Nigerians slam Shehu Sani’s advice to citizens hiding in US amid Trump’s mass deportation

Shehu Sani, Former Senator Shehu Sani, Former Senator

Former Kaduna Central senator, Shehu Sani, has advised Nigerians hiding from the mass deportation in the United States of America under President Donald Trump to return home.

Sani took to his X page on Sunday, February 2, 2025.

Since Trump assumed office as president, he signed the order to deport all immigrants. This exercise has been ongoing, with many immigrants being apprehended and sent back to their various home countries.

As a result, many nationals, including Nigerians, have gone into hiding to avoid being deported.

Reacting to this, Sani wrote, “Nigerians in the US hiding from Trump’s deportation should just humbly come back home.”

His comment did not sit well with many who tackled him, asking why they should return home when they will be met with hunger and hardship.

Some believe many immigrants are unable to afford air tickets to enable them to return home.

Below are some reactions.

Onikoyi Esho  @CallMeHabeeb And do what exactly?

@CroBender So they will be kidnapped by released repentant terrorists.

@flourish007 Good advice, but what's exactly on the table for them back home, sir?

@XtremelifeM But they saw this coming…did they think Trump was bluffing?

@otakerioghenero Come back home to do what? Those at home what are they doing? Nothing just nothing. Ugochukwu

@ugochukwu_cugo Mr Senator I hope you know the shame and the huge amount of money they spent in going there Which they have not recovered?

@DailyJusticeAct You mean those who have fund for air ticket? They need to be rescued..

Maybe they should be sent NN zamazima ship to evacuate them.

@EngrFAB There is no home to go back too, I don’t blame them for hanging around, who’s gonna leave this heaven and go back to the HELL you politicians have made Nigeria?

@LekanAdeosun2 For some of them, coming home is not an option except if they're deported. They won't consider coming because they don't have anything to show for their years of living abroad.

@JoshuaSorshima Lot of them really want to but the lack of safe esteemed, the shame back home and also some can't afford flights tickets now, so the issue of humble coming back is out at least for now.

@iamEKVU: Returning home is a personal decision, but let’s not act like the system back home makes it easy for everyone. People migrate for survival, not for fun. Instead of mocking them, let’s focus on making Nigeria a place they’d want to return to.

@aghom_Friday: Nigeria leaders has no good plans for their citizens. Where is the social welfare for the citizenry. A country were leaders use their citizens to make money.

@TuwaSamson: So that you can share them the latest transistor radios?
