Bayer Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso has opened up on why he started Nigerian international Victor Boniface against Hoffenheim despite being sidelined for three months.
The 24-year-old was named in the starting lineup in what was his first major action since recovering from the injury he sustained while on international duty with the Super Eagles back in November.
Boniface seized the opportunity with aplomb by giving Leverkusen the lead in the 15th minute before Jeremie Frimpong doubled their lead four minutes later.
Patrik Schick made it 3-0 in the 51st minute before Nigerian international Gift Orban pulled a goal back in the 62nd minute.
Alonso was asked why he started Boniface in the game, and he had the following to say:
“I always have trust. It was an important moment for him after his injury. The situation last week was a bit strange, unpleasant,” Alonso said.
“It was important that he felt important again, felt the love of the fans, that’s important for the mind.”
The goal was Boniface's 9th of the season in 16 appearances for the Bundesliga title holders.
