Senegalese legend El Hadj Diouf has tipped the Atlas Lions of Morocco as the number one favourites to win the 2025 African Cup of Nations.
The 2001 and 2002 African Footballer of the Year believes the North African giants can repeat the heroics of Ivory Coast by counting on home support to win the next edition of the Nations Cup on home soil.
Speaking after the draw on Monday, the former Liverpool star said, “Today, the No.1 favourite is Morocco.”
Diouf, who was instrumental in Senegal's run to the quarterfinals of the 2002 FIFA World Cup, tipped his country as the team with the second-best chance of winning the title.
He later added the likes of Egypt, Algeria, Cameroon, and Ivory Coast as other favourites, leaving out last edition’s finalists, Nigeria.
“Number 2 favourite is Senegal,” Diouf said. “Why not Egypt, why not Cameroon as usual, and Algeria? But then there will be outsiders; perhaps the Ivory Coast will be among the outsiders.”
The 2025 AFCON will hold between December 21, 2024, to January 18, 2026, in Morocco.
