Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has been detained indefinitely after refusing the bail conditions presented to him by the Nigeria Police Force.
On Monday, January 27, 2025, Sowore arrived at the police facility following an invitation for questioning regarding a video he shared on social media where he alleged police extortion along the airport road in Lagos.
In the video, Sowore can be seen confronting police officers conducting a stop and search on the busy road, accusing them of creating unnecessary traffic with their activity.
Upon arriving at the police facility, Sowore was presented with bail conditions that he rejected, describing them as illegal.
The conditions required Sowore to provide a level 16 civil servant as a surety and surrender his international passport.
Taking to his social media page, Sowore wrote, “I refuse to participate in any arrangement that undermines my personal integrity.
I’d rather remain in custody until this joke is over.”
Sowore’s legal counsel, Femi Falana (SAN), supported his stance, citing a Court of Appeal ruling in Dasuki v. Director-General, S.S.S., which declared similar bail conditions unconstitutional.
Falana stated that involving public servants as sureties is contrary to civil service rules and undermines anti-corruption efforts.
Sowore is reportedly being held at a police facility in Abuja, once operated by the now-disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).
