Court clears Lagos Igbo chief of terrorism charges

Frederick Nwajagu Frederick Nwajagu

Eze Ndigbo of Ajao Estate, Lagos, Frederick Nwajagu, has been discharged and acquitted of terrorism charges against him.

A Lagos State Magistrates Court in Yaba, had on April 5, 2023, ordered his remand at the Ikoyi custodial centre following terrorism charges filed against him.

Nwajagu was accused of trying to invite the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to Lagos, saying the group will protect Igbo people from the attacks they were allegedly facing in the state.

He was immediately arrested and kept in the Ikoyi prisons since 2023 after a video of him making the threat went viral.

Nwajagu has now been acquitted by the Lagos State High Court sitting at Tafawa Balewa Square.

However, the court convicted and sentenced him to 12 months imprisonment for the offence of parading himself as a certified chief in Lagos State, contrary to the Oba and Chiefs Law of Lagos State.

Chief Fabian Onwughalu, one of the lawyers representing Nwajagu, disclosed that, "Having been incarcerated for almost two years, he was ordered to be released immediately," he said.

Onwughalu lamented that the "conviction offends the fundamental rights of Freedom of Association of Ndigbo in Lagos State."

According to him, the Eze Ndigbo title is not recognized by the law of Lagos State but is the right of the Igbo people, and so has nothing to do with the Oba and Chiefs Law.
