The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has said it aims to achieve a production target of at least 2.1 million barrels of oil per day in 2025.
This was disclosed by the Commission Chief Executive, Engr. Gbenga Komolafe, when he appeared before the Senate Committee on Appropriation.
According to Komolafe, the commission has made significant strides since its establishment in 2021, noting that Nigeria’s rig count, which stood at 16 as of 2021, has now doubled to 32.
He revealed that the increase reflects ongoing efforts to boost upstream activities and enhance the country’s crude oil production capacity.
The CCE added that this bold production target aims to position Nigeria as a more competitive and sustainable player in the global oil and gas industry
Komolafe also revealed plans by the NUPRC to generate revenue for Nigeria while controlling gas flaring.
He said the NUPRC will achieve the target through development of a comprehensive Gas Flaring and Commercialization Plan which aims to reduce methane emissions significantly while generating additional revenue for Nigeria through optimized gas utilization and monetization.
Komolafe emphasized NUPRC’s commitment to balancing environmental sustainability with economic growth in the upstream petroleum sector.
