A former soldier in the Nigerian Army, Ayodele Olawale, has revealed that the force lacks sophisticated weapons to fight Boko Haram insurgents.

During an appearance on Arise TV's The Morning Show programme, Olawale lamented that voicing out about the lack of appropriate weapons led to the accusation of mutiny against he and some of his colleagues.

He said, "The reason why we were accused of mutiny is because we spoke out. Simply because we cried out that this deadly sect that terrorizes the country are more equipped with better weapons. Nigerians knew there was nothing like mutiny."

He lamented that whenever Boko Haram insurgents were approaching to attack, soldiers could hear the sound of their weapons even when the terrorists were miles away.

"If you want to come and fight me, you are supposed to come in hiding and ambush me. But Boko Haram used to come with full confidence," he added.

He said the reason why the insurgents start shooting even before reaching the location of their target is because they know they will never run out of ammunition.

"Imagine me having just 60 rounds as ammunition. As trained personnel, we had to make sure that each bullet counts, that the bullets achieve their intended purpose," he said.

He stated that Nigerian soldiers are capable of finishing off the insurgents only if they are provided with sophisticated weapons.

Olawale also revealed that the soldiers still in the force will attest to the fact that the situation he complained about has not changed since he left.
