Augustine Eguavoen has opened up on the appointment of Eric Chelle as the new head coach of the Super Eagles.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on Monday, January 13, unveiled the Malian tactician in a ceremony held at the Media Conference Room of the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja.

Eguavoen had been in charge of the Eagles since the September international break and guided the team to qualify for the 2025 African Cup of Nations.

The 59-year-old led the team to finish at the top of Group D ahead of Benin, Rwanda, and Libya.

Eric Chelle's appointment means that Eguavoen will now return to his original role as the technical director of the NFF.

Speaking on Chelle's appointment after the unveiling, the former international urged all Nigerians to rally behind Eric Chelle and give him all the needed support.

“It’s a hot seat,” Eguavoen said, as quoted by Brila FM.

“But we should do everything we can to make it as cool as possible. It’s not about me or Eric; it’s about Nigeria and flying our flag at the World Cup in 2026.”
