The National Public Relations Officer of the Petroleum Products Retail Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN), Dr. Joseph Obele, has stated that some petrol retail outlets are currently left with no other option but to lay off their staff due to low sakes all over the country.

Dr Obele made this known while speaking to a radio station in Abuja.

According to him, whereas retail outlets used to sell up to 15,000 litres daily a couple of years back, many of them now struggle to sell up to 3,000 litres of fuel.

He added that there is no longer an issue of fuel scarcity in Nigeria, but the product is now expensive, leading to low sales.

He continued that it has become a thing of the past to see people drive into the filling stations and request a full tank.

Dr Obele said: “All we hear now is, ‘Sell me 3 litres, 5 litres, and the likes. Fuel is extremely expensive, and many people simply cannot afford it.

"This is also affecting us, the retail outlet owners. A lot of us are even laying off staff as we speak”.
