Chief of Defense Staff, General Christopher Musa, has responded to the question of who is responsible for funding the terrorist group Boko Haram for the last 15 years.
Speaking in an interview with the prominent Qatari media network Al Jazeera, General Musa stated that the international community is responsible for sponsoring Boko Haram.
Gen Musa pointed out that whenever they apprehend members of the terrorist group, they are often found with hard currencies. According to him, this supports his assertion that the international community is behind the insurgency.
When host Neave Barker asked Gen Musa how Boko Haram has been able to regroup repeatedly, he responded by saying that the funding of the insurgents needs to be tracked and called on the United Nations to intervene.
“The problem is that I think we have talked to the international communities; let's find out the funding. When they started surrendering, as we left, we have over 120,000 who have surrendered. Most of them, when found, are carrying hard currencies. How did they get them? How are they funded? How did they get the training? How did they get the equipment?
Well, maybe it’s an international conspiracy, you don’t know, who knows? How have they been able to sustain themselves for over 15 years? That is a question I think everybody should ask themselves. For Nigeria to hold them and you go to Nigeria and everything seems to be working well.
I’m sure everybody knows that these challenges we are facing need to be addressed. So, the UN needs to come in to ensure that, because we need to trace the funding. How are they sustaining themselves for 15 years?
The UN coming in means tracing, tracking the funding, its international flow. We don’t have control over that.”
Videos of Gen Musa’s response circulating on social media have attracted several reactions from Nigerians, with many applauding his courage and intelligence.

_sbentem231: 15 years the government doesn’t know where Terrorists funding & Military grade weapons is coming from? The list of terrorist sponsors that was supposed to be made public, where is it? No arrest, no interrogation, no prosecution. One was allegedly accused of sponsoring terrorism but right now he’s minister of state for defense. Naija matter don tire me abeg.
