40-day prayer and fasting: Please what’s this fasting for? - Fayose asks PFN

Social commentator Isaac Fayose questioned the recent move by the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) to declare a 40-day prayer and fasting to address the unbearable hardship and hunger currently plaguing Nigerians.

In a post on social media, Fayose asked what the fasting was for, emphasizing that citizens are hungry and therefore there was no need for Nigerians to fast.

"Please, what’s this fasting for? People are hungry already," he questioned.

The PFN has come under intense criticism for what some have declared as a waste of time. Other social media critics believe that Nigeria's problems are physical rather than spiritual, and any attempt to alleviate the challenge using spiritual means would be ineffective.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday, the President of the PFN, Bishop Francis Wale Oke, and Deputy President, Archbishop John Daniel, said the problems facing the country require divine intervention for relief and prosperity.

According to the duo, the program is scheduled to begin on January 6, 2025, and end with a national prayer gathering in Abuja on February 14, 2025.

Oke stated that the prayers will precede the PFN’s 18th Biennial Conference, scheduled to be held in Abuja from February 10 to 14, 2025, with the theme “The Rebirth of a Great Nation: Nigeria is Great.”
