There is widespread anger as the federal government failed to pay National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members the N77, 000 allowance.

Reports indicate that the government paid the old N33,000 despite an earlier announcement to begin the new payment in October.

On September 25, 2024, the federal government declared an increase in the monthly allowance for serving corps members from N33, 000 to N77, 000 effective from July 2024.

The increment was meant to ease the hardship facing the corps as a result of the economic challenges in the country.

Earlier this month, the Director-General of NYSC, Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, highlighted the delay in implementing the new allowance.

Speaking in an interview with BBC Hausa, Ahmed disclosed that the increase had not taken effect due to the inability of the government to release funds.

Despite the assurances in September, corps members are expressing their grieviances as they received the same amount in October.

Taking to X, a corps member wrote,

@OGUNBANWOOMOSIL: "What do you expect from 419 government. Everything about them is propaganda, lies, deceit & looting.

"Unfortunately, the journey of this undeserved suffering is long and their is nothing we can do about it."

@Smartveee: "N77k allawee is a scam and this government is working on scrapping the NYSC."

John_Kingsley0: "In 2024??? It's definitely not funny for the corpers who depend on this stipend to survive. It's just ridiculous."

@JosDrugist: "Pure evil now you see that they will never scrap NYSC... Cheap labour, and a means to siphon funds."
