The Lagos State Task Force has warned that residents caught conducting events on public roads risk imprisonment.
This announcement comes in response to the increasing number of gatherings on public roads, which caused significant inconvenience to other road users.
The Task Force stated that legal action will be taken against those who violate state laws prohibiting road blockages for events.
Recently, five individuals were arrested for blocking Raymond Njoku Road in Ikoyi for a birthday party, which obstructed the flow of traffic and created a public nuisance.
According to Tokunbo Wahab, the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, the culprits included the celebrant, event planner, musician, sound engineer, and vendor, adding that “the suspects... will be tried in court according to the laws of the state. Lagos will not permit disregard for regulations.”
The Task Force Spokesperson Chairman, Adetayo Akerele, highlighted other streets where similar events have disrupted the public, such as Lawani Street in Yaba and Ganiyu Lamina Street in Ijaye Ojokoro.
Akerele stated, “It is unacceptable for individuals or groups to use public roads for personal events, causing inconvenience and endangering public safety.”
The agency urged residents to report any events in their area that disturb the peace of the community. They also launched an initiative called “See Something, Say Something” and announced collaboration with other security organizations to monitor and enforce compliance, with the goal of maintaining law and order.
