Isaac Fayose, a social commentator, has appealed to the police to deny the release of the embattled singer and social media sensation, Darlington Okoye, aka Speed Darlington, after reports emerged that he was in the custody of the police force.
In a social media post reacting to his arrest, Fayose accused the singer of making insensitive comments.
"Speed Darlington. That Speed Darlington can talk anyhow. Do you remember the video where he said all children from Igbo and Yoruba tribes should be killed? Do you remember? And you people said we should leave him and that he is mentally ill. Does a mentally ill man buy data? Please, police, don't release him," he said in the video.
Reports emerged on social media that Darlington had been missing for three days. His whereabouts were only revealed by popular activist Deji Adeyanju, who said the singer was in Abuja.
Adeyanju, who is also representing him, revealed in a post on X that Speed Darlington, also known as Akpi, was arrested in Lagos last Friday and subsequently transferred to Abuja, where he has remained in detention since.
He claimed that the arrest was based on a formal complaint from Grammy Award-winning artist Burna Boy.
However, he did not give details of the petition.
He wrote, “We just spent the last 30mins with Speed Darlington and he narrated how he was arrested in Lagos Friday last week, moved around, and eventually brought to Abuja and has been in detention since then. Petition against him was written by Burna Boy, we can confirm.”
