Former Niger Delta militant leader, Asari Dokubo, has publicly declared his support for Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, while accusing former Governor Nyesom Wike of deploying military intimidation tactics against him. The statement came on the same day as local government chairmanship elections were held across the state.
Dokubo, in a heated address, claimed that soldiers allegedly sent by Wike, now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), had flown helicopters over his residence in a bid to intimidate him.
"Wike’s soldiers and police have been flying over my house with two helicopters. I have the capacity to contain them," Dokubo asserted. He went on to express his determination, stating, "Nigeria cannot surrender to Wike. Rivers people will not surrender to Wike. I have the capacity to contain them, and the government knows that."
In his fiery remarks, Dokubo also threatened to take down the helicopters, warning those behind the actions to back off. "I swear by Allah, I will shoot down their helicopter. Whoever is commanding them should be warned. Enough is enough."
Dokubo, a vocal supporter of President Bola Tinubu, argued that Wike's influence would fade once stripped of his ministerial position. "Wike is nobody without the paraphernalia of office. Let them remove this thing from him and let us see," he said.
Despite the tension, Dokubo pledged to vote in the elections, vowing that results would be announced and the newly elected local government chairmen would be sworn in, regardless of any attempts to thwart the process.
The incident marks the latest in a long-standing rivalry between Dokubo and Wike, adding another layer of complexity to Rivers State’s already heated political landscape.
