Activist Aisha Yesufu has tackled Governor Godwin Obaseki for lamenting the outcome of the Edo State governorship election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) the winner of the election held on Saturday, September 21, 2024.

Okpebholo of the APC won in 11 local government areas, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Asue Ighodalo, won in 7, with Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP) winning none.

On Sunday, September 22, INEC’s Returning Officer, Prof. Faruk Adamu Kuta, the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, officially announced Okpebholo as the winner of the election.

According to INEC, Okpebholo garnered 291,667 votes to beat Ighodalo and Akpata, who received 247,274 and 18,737 votes, respectively.

During the collation of the results, Obaseki stormed the INEC’s collation centre unannounced around 2 am on Sunday but was met with fierce resistance and escorted out around 4:10 am.

Obaseki claimed his visit was to get first-hand information, resulting in a combined team of policemen led by DIG Frank Mbah and personnel of the Nigerian Army entering the premises to walk out Obaseki.

Reacting to Obaseki’s loss and the PDP, Yesufu took to her X page to criticise the governor.

She wrote, “I am looking for a video where Obaseki was speaking about the principles of democracy. Please share if you have it.

Obaseki that refused for 4 years to swear in 14 Edo House of Assembly members.

Obaseki that refused to swear in judges. He swore in 5 out of 8.

Obaseki that got his deputy Governor impeached. He is talking about democracy under attack.”
