Minister of Sports Development John Enoh says sporting officials will be dismissed from their roles if it is proven that they contributed to Nigeria's abysmal outing at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Enoh who spoke in an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today after the team's disastrous outing at the games said all the controversies from the games will be probed.
“All of those things, I am going to engage, I am going to interrogate,” he said.
“You don’t fire unless you interrogate. I have always stated my determination that I am not going to allow things to lie low; I am going to take them up one by one.”
Asked if heads will roll, the minister said, “Well, if that is what it takes; if my findings and interrogations get to that point that people become liable, people become responsible, for the kind of negative publicity that we had at the Olympics, why not?”
The Minister noted further that the different sporting federations in the country need comprehensive reforms for efficient sports development.
He also apologized to Nigerians while blaming the heads of the various federations
over the poor outing. According to him, the preparations for the games was lacklustre, emphasising the need for systems and structures at the federations to get the best athletes to represent Nigeria and get the desired medals in the next games.
“I’ve always stated that we need to reform our federations,” he said.
