Dele Momodu, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, has responded to the removal of Ali Ndume as Senate Chief Whip.
In a statement following the public announcement, he described Ndume's removal as "very sad and unfortunate" and questioned whether President Bola Tinubu could not be criticized.
Ndume, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) representing Borno South Senatorial District, was removed due to his recent criticism of President Tinubu.
He was immediately replaced by Tahir Monguno (Borno North), as announced by Senate President Godswill Akpabio after receiving support from party senators during the plenary session.
Prior to the vote, the national chairman of the APC, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, and the party secretary, Bashir Ajibola, sent a letter that was read during the plenary. The APC described Ndume's comments as "unguarded utterances" and "against the federal government."
They claimed that Ndume is "someone who is intent on dividing the country" and not representing the country well in the international community.
The party then recommended that Mr. Ndume's position in the Senate be filled by Mr. Monguno.
Following the reading of the letter, the Senate president called for a vote, which resulted in overwhelming support for the recommendation.
Akpabio approved the recommendation and instructed the Sergeant at Arms to escort Monguno to the seat of the Senate Whip in the front row.
