Eberechi Wike, the wife of Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), along with 21 others, were sworn in as justices of the Court of Appeal, on Wednesday, July 10, 2024.

Chie Justice of Nigeria, Olukayode Ariwoola, (CJN), urged the judicial officers to uphold the law, the constitution, and their oath of office in carrying out their duties.

Speaking at the justices’ inauguration at the Supreme Court headquarters in Abuja, Ariwoola cautioned against issuing misleading and conflicting judgements.

He said, “Punitive measures must be meted out to such erring judges.
“We have already activated the process of reining in such errant judges with a view to making them face the consequences of their despicable and odious conduct.”

The newly appointed 22 justices include Abdullahi Muhammad Liman from Nasarawa State, Abiodun Azeem Akinyemi from Ogun State, Olukayode Adegbola Adeniyi from Oyo State, Zainab Bage Abubakar from Kebbi State, Isaq Mohammed Sani from Kaduna State, Lateef Babajide Lawal-Akapo from Lagos State, and Ngozika U. Okaisabor from Imo State.

Others are Donatus Nwaezuoke Okorowo from Enugu State; Ruqayat Oremei Ayoola from Kogi State, Polycarp Terna Kwahar from Benue state, Eberechi Suzzette Nyesom-Wike from Rivers State, Fadawa Umaru from Borno state, Oyewumi Oyejoju Oyebiola from Oyo State, Ntong Festus Ntong from Akwa Ibom State, Nehizena Idemudia Afolabi from Edo State, and Nnamdi Okwy Dimgba from Abia State.

The remaining justices are Abdu Dogo from FCT, Abuja, Abdulazeez M. Anka from Zamfara State, Owibunkeonye Onwosi from Ebonyi State, Asma’u Akanbi-Yusuf from Kwara State, Victoria Toochukwu Nwoye from Anambra State, and Enenche Eleojo from Kogi State.

CJN also swore in 11 new judges for the High Court of the FCT.

Wike and several governors attended the swearing in ceremony of his wife.

In response to the news, many Nigerians on social media have expressed concerns about Wike’s wife’s new appointment.

Some allege that the ruling government has already begun to manipulate the 2027 elections in advance.

Here are some reactions.

@Biggie111026: I sense trouble, APC can never be defeated in Nigeria ever again…

@Mykoladoo: Better put; Wike has just been sworn in as Appeal Court Judge.

@NwaforUche5: Just tell me how u will get justice if you have a case against Nyeson Wike at the appeal court

@brenokwaraji: I think they should also appoint Remi as a Supreme Court judge so that the take over will be completed. Imagine any politician approach the Appeal Court and you are up against the landlord

@chidi_phil1983: It's part of the deal before rigging RIVER STATE to TINUBU

@adelove007: When I saw this video,I knew the judiciary is finished because one bad apple will definitely spoil the rest. Was there no way this woman would have been excused from this post at all.

@napuputhoughts: The foundation is being laid for 2027. Politicians claim that it's stressful to govern, but they bring in their partners and kids with so much ease. The Nigerian political arena is becoming more like the church business.

@consultchimosky: This is typical state capture. They are preparing ahead of 2027 presidential tribunal.

@Chidinm53737715: Emperor wike is cooking for Sim fubara
