The campaign video of Chief Moshood Abiola, the presumed winner of the annulled presidential elections of 1993, has resurfaced on social media.
Abiola campaigned on the "Hope" mantra under the Social Democratic Party (SDP) after General Ibrahim Babangida established the National Electoral Commission (NEC) in 1987 and legalized the formation of political parties in 1989. The second largest party at the time was the National Republican Convention (NRC), which nominated Bashir Tofa to contest against Abiola in the polls.
Before the military government of Babangida (IBB), which seized power from Major General Muhammadu Buhari's government in a 1985 coup, there were claims that it would be a transition government that would hand over to a civilian government by 1990.
In the video posted by Nostalgic Sounds, Moshood Abiola assured that he would alleviate poverty while promising free healthcare and education for Nigerians, among other things.
Individuals who recalled the memories of the campaign at the time said that the flyers and promises fell like confetti, reminiscent of a World Cup final where victors hoisted the trophy amidst a shower of confetti and cheers.
Daily Trust, in its report, mentioned that the atmosphere before the elections was filled with fanfare and freebies such as soaps, rice, milk, and imported clothing items, all of which could now be classified as "stomach infrastructure" being handed out to voters.
Moshood Abiola was declared the winner of the election after securing 58% of the total votes cast. Despite the overwhelming majority of national and international observers regarding the election as the freest and fairest in the country, Babangida's military regime strongly disagreed, claiming the opposite.
On June 26, 1993, the military Head of State issued a statement annulling the June 12 election. He decreed the repeal of the Presidential Elections (Basic Constitutional and Transitional Provisions) decree and terminated the transition process to democratic governance.
